Marsiling came under the Bukit Panjang Constituency jurisdiction before the General Elections in 1997. Bukit Panjang Constituency was divided into 3 divisions in 1997, namely Bukit Panjang, Woodlands, and Marsiling. During the 1980s, Marsiling was one of the largest housing estates in the north before the development of Woodlands New Town. Marsiling estate was low-lying with some hilly regions and has two rivers flowing through it; the Sungei Cina and Wanli River.

Prior to the twentieth century, Marsiling was a typical rural area with few villages. The landscape was covered mostly by rubber plantations and wasteland interspersed with attap houses, provision shops, fruits, flower and vegetable farms. One of the notable kampongs in Marsiling was Kampong Lorong Fatimah which existed for about 150 years. There was the main road with many connecting lanes; Kampong Sungei Cina, Lorong Marsiling, Hock Choon Road, Marsiling Avenue, Lorong Chikar, Genista Lane, Lorong Serindit, Lorong Chenangau and Lorong Salor Ayer, all of which did not exist anymore. The Marsiling Road was about 4 km. long, presently hosting the Woodlands Fire Station (Woodlands Road 23 km). The road witnessed several important milestones including; the construction of Woodlands Railway Station in 1910; the Singapore-Johor Causeway in 1923; the Bukit Timah Expressway in 1985; and the Marsiling MRT in 1996.

Marsiling Road got its name from the Chinese names given to the estate, which was Maxiling, Maxilin or Maxileng. The name Marsiling was made the official name during a grassroots leaders meeting led by Lee, Yiok Seng, the former MP.

Three Chinese schools were built in this estate from 1945 to 1946; Duanren School in present Marsiling Drive, Yitming School at the present Kranji Turf Club and Nanqiao School near the Woodlands Swimming Pool. Due to the development of Marsiling Housing Estate, all three schools had to be closed down.
