2) Write a 50-word blog entry about what you have found from your research about Bukit Panjang estate.
3) Post your comments here by clicking on "comments" or "the pencil" at the bottom right hand corner of this blog entry.

If you have any questions, please feel free to approach any NE Committee Teacher.

Bukit in the Malay Language means "hill" and Panjang means "long". Bukit Panjang literally means "long hill" which gets its name from the long range of low hills which ends in Bukit Timah to the south.

At the height of the movement to change place names in Singapore to Mandarin ones using hanyu pinyin romanization, the new town to be built in the area was initially known as Zhenghua, along with Yishun for Nee Soon, and Zhujiao market for tek kha market in Kandang Kerbau. The trading of old dialect names which have gained common currency for unfamiliar, Mandarin ones was not well-received by the public, and Bukit Panjang was quickly reinstated. However, the name Zhenghua is preserved in the name of the flyover between Bukit Panjang Road and the Bukit Timah Expressway as well as the Zhenghua Park.

Bukit Panjang gets its name from the range of low hills which begins from Mandai and ends in Bukit Timah to the south. It means a "long spread of hill" in Malay. The Bukit Panjang area used to comprise rural settlements which grew up along Bukit Timah Road in the early 1900s. There were agricultural areas, such as the Cold Storage Dairy Farm and industrial uses such as the Nanyang Shoe Factory, Lam Soon Canning and Rubber Factory as well as granite quarries.

the lrt system is one of only five in the island and no doubt it is a more convenient mode of travel but early morning rush hours spoil the day for many residents. The packed trains incite many grievances towards SMRT. on the whole, it does in fact make life more convenient for the residents of the bukit panjang area.

Bukit Panjang, the town on a hill in the west of Singapore, has a population of est. 100’000. One of the youngest towns in Singapore, it is located beside the central catchment nature reserve.
Bukit Panjang was not that big in the past. Its boundary is only up till the areas in petir, pending, bangkit and Fajar LRT stations. Construction started to extend to the western side of Bukit Panjang to the town centre.
In the past, the roads of the town was stuffed with buses. After the construction of the first LRT line n the country, services were down to 2 services.
In whole, I think I would live here in future, and I would like to get an executive flat along petir road!

I am stay at choa chu kang area. I am here to share about the history about the Choa Chu Kang. Between the late 18th to early 19th century, Chinese immigrants settled along the river, Sungei Berih. These settlers were called Kangchu, where chu was an established clan name, thus the name Choa Chu Kang. Choa Chu Kang was a small remote rural district with old kampong housing, rubber and coconut plantations. The Chinese district that grew out of that community included Kampong Belimbing and Kampong Choa Chu Kang. Most of the early inhabitants belong to the Teochew clan who were mainly farmers growing ganmi and pepper. Choa Chu Kang was infamous for wild tigers with the last tiger in Singapore shot here in the 1930s.

I like to stay in Choa Chu Kang because I find the people here kind and friendly.
